Smale, Robert

Smale joined MU’s History Department in 2005. He specialized in the history of the Andean region of Latin America. He has spend more than two years living and studying in the land-locked Andean republic of Bolivia. He has also traveled widely in Mexico, Peru, Argentina, and Chile. His research focuses on the political, economic, and cultural struggles of South America’s popular classes the rural peasantry and the urban working class. His first book entitled I Sweat the Flavor of Tin labor Activism in Early Twentieth-Century Bolivia appeared through the University of Pittsburgh Press in 2010. It studied worker political mobilization in early twentieth-century Bolivia. That country experienced one of Latin America’s most substantial social revolutions of the modern era.
