Professor Mitchell joined the University of Missouri School of Law faculty in 2006. He has a JD and PhD in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. His interdisciplinary scholarship focuses on the criminal justice system, specifically the collateral consequences of a criminal conviction. In 2011, he was selected to be a Missouri Supreme Court Faculty Fellow where he researched the topic of ex-offender reentry in the State.

Prior to coming to MU, he was a Scholar in Residence in the Department of Sociology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has served as a law clerk to the Honorable Andre M. Davis of the U.S. District Court of Maryland. Prior to attending law school, Professor Mitchell was a teacher at his high school alma mater, Collegiate School, serving also as the Director of Student Diversity, Sophomore Class Dean, and Assistant Track Coach. He is an Affiliate Faculty Member of the MU Black Studies Program and a Policy Research Scholar with the MU Institute for Public Policy.
